Victorian Side Return with Split Level

Victorian terrace houses with the classic L shape form are staple of UK housing stock.

Ubiquitous in most towns and cities yet incredibly sophisticated piece of domestic architecture.

The Victorians were masters at efficient yet attractive design solutions. These houses make excellent projects for a young family.

The popular solution to extend the home is to infill the side return space. The challenge is to execute this without making the remainder of the ground floor dark.

Harpenden UCHI designed a vaulted ceiling with 4 Velux Integra roof windows, the gable end is completely glazed.

The sloping site also allowed the extension to be split level, this increased connectivity with the garden as well as increasing ceiling height.

Space and light were maximised.
